I've interviewed 200+ engineers. The ones who can't debug a production incident at 2am aren't the bootcamp grads. Stop fetishizing the degree. Here's what actually matters.

In 2019, I was a hiring manager at Netflix. We had a staff engineer candidate from Stanford. Perfect GPA, distributed systems coursework, the whole resume. Failed the system design round so badly we ended the interview early. The guy couldn't reason about what happens when a Kafka consumer falls behind. Couldn't explain back-pressure. We hired a self-taught engineer that same week who'd been running production systems at a 12-person startup. She's a principal now.
Most people are wrong about what a CS degree actually gives you.
Algorithms. Complexity theory. Some graph traversal you'll touch once every four years when a leetcode interview demands it. That's mostly it. The degree teaches you to think formally about computation. That's genuinely valuable. But it doesn't teach you how systems actually break. It doesn't teach you that your beautiful consistent hashing design means nothing when the network partitions at 3am and PagerDuty is screaming.
Real engineering is learned in production. Full stop.
I've mentored engineers from MIT who couldn't read a Datadog flame graph. I've worked with bootcamp grads who wrote some of the best incident postmortems I've ever read. The correlation between degree quality and engineering quality is weak. Much weaker than the industry pretends.

Big tech recruiting pipelines. That's it. Google, Meta, Apple — their resume screeners still filter on pedigree. It's lazy and it's wrong but it's real. If your goal is a $400k total comp offer from one of those five companies, a CS degree from a recognizable school is still the fastest path through the front door.
But here's the thing: that door isn't the only door anymore. Stripe, Vercel, PlanetScale, Temporal — the best infrastructure companies in the world right now care enormously about what you've built and almost nothing about where you studied. I've seen this shift accelerate since 2023. The credential fetishism is dying. It's just dying slowly.
Production scars. I'm serious. Show me a GitHub repo where you've written a postmortem. Show me a side project where you hit a real constraint and had to reason about tradeoffs. Show me that you understand why eventual consistency is hard, not just that you can define it.
Build something that breaks. Then fix it. Then write about why it broke.
Engineers who understand TCP_NODELAY, who've actually tuned JVM GC settings, who've debugged a split-brain scenario in a Raft implementation — those engineers are rare. Rarer than Stanford graduates. Way rarer.
The best junior engineer I ever hired had no degree. He'd spent two years contributing to the Vitess project and running a MySQL cluster for a gaming company. He knew more about storage engines than 90% of our senior staff.

Don't skip the degree if you're 18 and have the option. The network, the recruiting pipeline access, the four years to think deeply without production pressure — that's real value. But don't believe the degree is what makes you a good engineer. It's not. The market in 2026 is too competitive and too technical for credentials to carry you.
What carries you is reps. What carries you is having debugged something genuinely hard and survived it.
Nobody cares where you learned to suffer. Just that you can.
