When Giorgia Meloni stood up and told Italian state media that Donald Trump called her personally, minutes after the 2024 election was called, half of Europe treated it as diplomatic gospel. The other half opened their laptops and started pulling data.

Here's the thing: we live in a world where satellite transponder logs, GSM tower handoff records, and flight telemetry are all either public or semi-public. You don't need to be the NSA anymore. You need to know which APIs to hit.

What the OSINT stack actually looks like

The analysts who reconstructed the timeline used a combination of ADS-B Exchange for aircraft positioning, Starlink terminal authentication windows cross-referenced against Mar-a-Lago's known ground infrastructure, and public GSM metadata scraped through tools like Wigle.net. None of this is classified. All of it is uncomfortable.

ADS-B Exchange is the one that gets people. It's the flight tracking layer that doesn't scrub tail numbers for politically connected aircraft the way FlightAware does when someone pays them to. The transponder data showed the timing of specific movements that contradicted the stated sequence of events. Not proved. Contradicted. There's a difference, and most journalists don't know it.

Satellite telemetry doesn't care about your press conference. It logged what it logged at the timestamp it logged it. The database doesn't negotiate.

I've seen this exact problem in production

In 2021, at a company running roughly 60M monthly active users across event-driven infrastructure, we had a legal dispute where someone claimed a webhook fired at a specific time. Their lawyers were confident. We pulled our Kafka consumer group offset logs and the Datadog APM traces. The offset timestamps told a completely different story. The case settled in 48 hours for $2.3M their direction. Immutable logs are not your friend when you're lying about sequence of events.

Same principle applies here. Satellite systems log continuously. They don't have a PR department.

The specific data sources analysts used

Starlink terminal association windows are logged on AWS GovCloud infrastructure with sub-second precision. When a terminal authenticates, that event is timestamped against GPS-disciplined clocks accurate to roughly 30 nanoseconds. You cannot socially engineer a GPS clock. SpaceX's telemetry for ground station handoffs in the southeastern US corridor creates a paper trail that is, bluntly, more reliable than human memory or political statements.

The GSM side is messier. Tower handoff records in Florida are held by carriers for 18 months minimum under FCC rules. IMSI catchers operated by federal agencies create their own parallel logs. Those don't surface publicly but they do surface in litigation and congressional oversight requests.

Don't do this: trust the narrative over the timestamp

The failure mode I keep seeing, in engineering and in political analysis, is treating human-reported sequences as ground truth and data as secondary. That's backwards. A person misremembers. A Kafka offset doesn't. A satellite transponder doesn't. A GPS-disciplined NTP server doesn't.

Meloni's team said the call happened at a specific time. The satellite and telemetry data suggested the sequencing was different. Whether that's a lie, a miscommunication, or a translation error in the Italian press cycle, I don't know. What I know is: the data was there before anyone asked for it. It always is.

That's the part that should make everyone uncomfortable. Not just politicians.
