Only 5 Jobs Survive AI by 2030. I Call BS.

Some expert dropped a list of 'AI-proof' jobs and everyone's sharing it like gospel. I've been building AI-powered products for 3 years and the list is both obvious and completely wrong in ways that should scare you.

Only 5 Jobs Survive AI by 2030. I Call BS.

An 'expert' just told the internet that only 5 jobs survive AI by 2030.

Mental health therapists. Clergy. Skilled tradespeople. Creative directors. Politicians.

Everyone's nodding along. Sharing it. Feeling relieved or terrified depending on where they sit.

I think the framing is completely wrong and it's gonna hurt people who believe it.

Here's what they got right (kinda)

The trades thing is real. I tried to get AI to fix the leaking pipe under my sink. Shockingly, GPT-4o couldn't reach through my screen with a wrench.

And yeah, human connection stuff — therapy, clergy, whatever — that's got real stickiness. People want to feel seen by another person. That's not gonna evaporate by Tuesday.

But here's where the whole argument falls apart.

The list protects jobs. It doesn't protect income.

In 2023, I was running a SaaS tool for solo consultants — about $8,400 MRR, small but real. Our users were researchers, writers, strategists. Classic 'knowledge workers.'

AI didn't kill their jobs.

It killed their rates.

Within 18 months, the going rate for a brand strategy doc dropped by about 40% in the communities I was watching. The job title still existed. The LinkedIn profiles still said 'Senior Brand Strategist.' But clients had ChatGPT doing a first pass and they wanted humans to just... clean it up. For less money.

That's the thing nobody's saying out loud. The question isn't 'will this job exist?' It's 'will this job pay what it used to?'

Those are wildly different questions.

The real list nobody wants to publish

The jobs that keep their income aren't necessarily the ones that are 'AI-proof.' They're the ones where the human being IS the product.

Your therapist's job survives because you specifically want Dr. Kim, not a therapy session. Your favorite tattoo artist survives because you want their aesthetic, their hands, their story on your skin. The plumber survives because someone has to show up at 11pm when your basement is flooding.

But a 'creative director' at a mid-size agency? That job title is on the list but I'd bet good money the headcount in that role gets cut 60% by 2027. The surviving creative directors will manage AI output at 3x the volume for maybe 1.2x the pay. That's not surviving. That's a different job wearing the same name tag.

What I'd actually tell my 2020 self

Stop trying to figure out which job category is safe. That's the wrong game.

Build a personal brand so specific that you're the product. Or build equity in a business so your income isn't tied to your hourly output. Or get really good at the thing AI is worst at — which is operating in messy, physical, emotionally chaotic reality.

I bootstrapped my first product to $10k MRR writing code I'm now embarrassed by. The code got better. The lesson that stuck was this: nobody's paying for the output. They're paying because I shipped it, stood behind it, and answered support tickets at 1am.

AI can't do that last part yet.

Build around the stuff that requires you to actually give a damn.
